Graduate Instrumental Conducting Audition Requirements
 
Students interested in applying and auditioning for acceptance into the Graduate Conducting program must complete the online graduate application process.  In addition to this application, all candidates must submit the following materials to Dr. Michael W. Mapp, Director of Bands at New Mexico State University.
 
1stRound
  • Resume/Curriculum-Vita and references
  • Writing Sample – Analysis of major work for wind band.
  • 3 letters of reference
  • Prior teaching experience is HIGHLYrecommended
2ndRound
 
Following the receipt of the above materials, qualified candidates will be contacted and asked to submit conducting video of a rehearsal and performance.  It is recommended that the rehearsal and performance be of the same piece of music.
 
3rdRound
 
Following the review of all materials submitted, potential candidates will be invited to campus for an in-person audition and interview.  This will consist of:
 
  • Rehearsal with the NMSU Wind Symphony
  • Diagnostic Exam – Repertoire, Musical Terminology, etc…
  • Meetings with:
    • Director of Bands 
    • Associate Director of Bands
    • Current Graduate Students
The deadline for submission of 1stround materials is February 15. Admission to the program may be competitive. Spots are limited and based on ability. Graduate Assistantships are available to qualifying students.
