Biography

Steven L. Smyth is Associate Professor of Music at New Mexico State University, where he serves as the Associate Director of Bands and Music Education Coordinator. In his duties he conducts the NMSU Symphonic Band, the Pride of New Mexico Marching Band, Roadrunner Basketball Band, and teaches courses in Music Education.

Dr. Smyth’s research interests span the subjects of live cinema, wind literature, leadership development, commercial music ensembles in education, and curriculum innovation.  He has conducted, adjudicated, and presented all over the world including at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, Texas Music Educators Association Convention, and the College Band Directors National Association Convention.  At NMSU, Dr. Smyth’s ensembles achieved national attention for their innovation during the COVID-19 pandemic and were featured in The New York Times.  While serving as Director of Athletic Bands at Iowa State University, the ensemble won the prestigious Sudler Award for Excellence in College Marching Band.

Dr. Smyth holds a Doctorate in Wind Conducting from the University of Kansas, a Master of Conducting Pedagogy and Performance from Oklahoma State University, and a Bachelor of Music Education from Iowa State University.
