February 2025 Faculty News and Honors

 

NMSU faculty are committed to community and school outreach. Professor Jorge Espinoza worked with music students at Centro Educativo Musical Tomza (CEMUT) in Juarez. The NMSU Music Department Faculty Brass Quintet, Jacob Dalager, Dawid Mzyk, Jim Shearer, Angela Winter, and emeritus faculty member Pancho Romero, played at Jefferson High School in El Paso. In addition to performing and teaching, faculty members shared NMSU Music Department education opportunities with the students.

On February 19-21, Dr. Jacob Dalager, Assistant Professor of Trumpet and Jazz, was a clinician at the Socorro Independent School District Jazz Invitational at Montwood High School in El Paso. Dr. Dalager listened to and worked with more than two dozen bands, helping them with their style, ensemble, precision, and improvisation.

Dr.  Dalager will perform his original composition, 3ɟutures for trumpet and orchestra, with the Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra March 29-30 in Atkinson Recital Hall. A concerto, this piece uses climate literature to create sonic imagery of extreme weather events 3ɟutures has received recognition from the American Prize, International Music Grand Prix, and College Music Society.

Dr. Yoshiko Arahata participated in a Trio Residency at the University of Rochester and Colgate University, performing a program of Piano Trios by Women Composers, and teaching master classes. She also taught a piano master class and presented research on Latin American Piano Literature Beyond Canon at Nazareth University in Rochester.
