NMSU Wind Symphony Presents Modern Legacies

As a part of this year’s annual Research and Creativity week (February 26-March 1), the NMSU Music department will host three free events at the Atkinson Recital Hall. Events scheduled for the week include performances by the NMSU Wind Symphony, the NMSU Faculty Brass Quintet, and the NMSU Faculty Woodwind quintet.

The NMSU Wind Symphony will perform on Monday, February 26th, at 7:30 pm. The concert will be the first opportunity to hear the program that the ensemble will perform at the College Band Directors National Association Conference in Kansas City later that week. The concert will feature two premieres. First, Dr. Steven Smyth will conduct David Biedenbender’s, Luminescence. Following our opening, the ensemble will perform the second movement from Joni Greene’s symphony, Reaching Nirvana, entitledMeditation. This will be the CBDNA Premiere of the work which was written for Dr. Michael Mapp and the NMSU Wind Symphony. Next on the program is Holst’s seminal piece for winds, Hammersmith: Prelude and Scherzo. The concert will then culminate with the CBDNA Premiere of Catherine Likhuta’s, timpani concerto, Storm Chasers, featuring Dr. Fred Bugbee on timpani.

All events will be held in the Atkinson Recital Hall and are free and open to the public.
