NMSU 2024 Southwest Honor Band
The Southwest Honor Band at New Mexico State University is an international honor band festival that attracts students from throughout the United States and abroad. Over the past seven years, this event has grown to include participation of over 300 students who take part in masterclasses, chamber ensembles, sectionals, and social events. The event also includes performances by the NMSU Wind Symphony, Desert Winds, and the Proud Pete Rock Band. Participating high school students also have opportunities to receive scholarships while participating in the event as well.FeesParticipating students pay a small fee ($60.00) to participate. This fee helps to cover the costs of lodging and some meals while they are on campus. It also helps cover the cost of the Festival Fiesta and Senior Luncheon. Chaperones are provided by NMSU Bands. School Directors are encouraged but not required to provide chaperones as well.Registration ProcessPlease fill out ALL areas and submit a link to your audition where asked. If you are auditioning in person please state "In Person" where the link is asked.Online Submissions are Due by DECEMBER 15, 2023 by 11:59 pm.AUDITION REQUIREMENTSWoodwinds and Brass:Submit audio recordings of the following:
- Scales - Chromatic Scale in as many octaves as possible, in eighth notes at quarter note = 92
- Etudes/Excerpts - Students should perform two contrasting (slow/lyrical and fast/technical) excerpts that showcase their playing ability. All state audition materials from your state of residence are perfectly acceptable.
Percussion:
- Percussionists should submit a VIDEO demonstrating your ability on Snare, Keyboard, AND Timpani
Video and Link Information:The video or audio recording should be made with the auditioning student in full view of the camera. The student should announce:
- Full Name
- Grade
- High School
Example: "Hello, I am Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. I am in the 10th grade and I go to Vienna High School."The student should play the audition materials in the following order:
- Chromatic Scale (Woodwinds and Brass Only)
- Excerpts
Upload the video to YouTube or similar format and make sure that the link is accessible to anyone with whom it is shared.
Provide the link below. It is through a shared format such as Google drive, make sure that it is accessible to all who have the link. If permission must be asked to open the link, this may delay the audition being heard or cause the audition to be rejected all together. Double check that your link is accessible to anyone with the link prior to submitting your form.
