Biography

Lisa Van Winkle currently serves as the Associate Professor of Flute and the Coordinator of the Aural Skills program at New Mexico State University.  Dr. Van Winkle enjoys a diverse career as a teacher, recitalist, soloist and orchestral musician.  An advocate of chamber music, Dr. Van Winkle has collaborated and performed in several chamber ensembles including the Mirage Duo (flute & piano), the Cielo Azul Chamber Trio (flute, oboe & bassoon) the Faculty Woodwind Quintet and most recently the Clarion Duo (flute & piano). The Clarion Duo, with pianist Dr. Esequiel Meza, has appeared on numerous chamber music series in New Mexico, Texas and Colorado and specializes in a broad range of styles including current composers.  “Ponderings”, a multi-movement work with media presentation that was originally composed for oboe and piano by Lon W. Chaffin, was rewritten for the Clarion Duo and premiered in March of 2013.
 
International performances include tours of Germany, Austria, Prague and Bogotá, Colombia and two appearances at the William Bennett Summer School (Farnham, UK). , Dr. Van Winkle’s orchestral experiences have included serving as the principal flute with the Las Cruces Symphony (1999-2009) and the Juarez (Mexico) Symphony. She has also performed with the Opera Company of El Paso, Dona Ana Lyric Opera, the Sun City Chorale, the Bruce Nehring Consort and the Chamber Players de Las Cruces. She has been an artist in resident at the Santa Fe Flute Immersion (NM 2013), the “Big Fat Flute Shindig” at West Texas A&M (Canyon, 2014) and Eastern New Mexico University’s Flute Day (Portales, 2014).  Dr. Van Winkle has appeared at National Flute Association conventions as both a soloist and a conductor, leading the NMSU Flute Ensemble in two convention appearances in Albuquerque, NM and Las Vegas, NV.
 
Dr. Van Winkle has earned performance degrees from The University of Arizona, (Tucson, DMA, 2005) and New Mexico State University (Las Cruces, MM, 1996). She has also earned a Bachelor of Music Education from NMSU (1994) and a Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in management from West Texas A&M University (Canyon, TX, 1980).  Her business background combined with her formal music training has allowed her to work in such diverse fields as arts management and the banking and insurance industries. Dr. Van Winkle served as the Coordinator for the Music Business program at NMSU for 15 years. Additional experiences include working as the business manager for the Eugene Symphony (Eugene, OR) and in upper management of United New Mexico Bank in Las Cruces, NM.
