The 2nd annual Nuevo Mundo Festival and Academy, led by Artistic Director Simón Gollo, was held in July and featured faculty from prestigious organizations around the world as well as La Catrina String Quartet (Daniel Vega-Albela, Simón Gollo, Jorge Martinez-Rios, Jorge Espinoza). Several NMSU students were able to take part in the Festival and Academy, including recent graduate of the instrumental conducting master’s degree program at NMSU, Lizandro García Alvarado, who attended as an orchestral conducting participant, where he had the opportunity to work in a 9-day intensive program. The Orchestral Conducting class was led by two internationally recognized conductors: Jan Wagner (Shenandoah Conservatory Symphony Orchestra) and Carlos Botero (Houston Symphony). The NMSU students who were also privileged to attend the Festival were Caitlin Scott (violin); Elizabeth Greene, Julio Campos, and Melissa Herrera (viola); Andrea Gonzalez and Ceara Caisido (cello); and Seth Zamora, piano.
