University Choirs

University Singers, the most select choral ensemble at NMSU, consists of about 40 singers. This group has sung in Lincoln Center, New York (1988) and has toured Spain (1990), Germany and Austria (1992), London and Scotland (1995),  Italy (2001) and Austria (2004). Uni Singers has also performed for three Southwestern American Choral Directors Association Regional Conventions: Denver (1994), Dallas (1996), and Corpus Christi (1998). Undergraduate singers receive scholarships of $400 per semester and grad students receive $800 per semester.

Masterworks

This choir features a combination of campus and community people and is designed to perform an annual major choral work with orchestra. Training in vocal technique is a part of each rehearsal. The choir's repertoire includes such varied works as Amahl and the Night Visitors, Bach's Magnificat, Haydn's Creation, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms, Mozart's Requiem, Orff's Carmina Burana, Brahm's Requiem, and Durufle's Requiem. The choir will perform in The Holiday Concert (fall semester) and The Major Work Concert.

Men's and Women's Choir

Emphasis in this group is on vocal training as well as repertoire. Men's and Women's Choir is intended to train singers to become choral directors as well as experienced choral singers. Each choir usually participates in one major performance each semester. This is a non-auditioned choir and all singers who are interested in training as a choral professional are encouraged to join.

Gospel Choir

This choir, established by Dr. Andrew Wall in the mid 1970s, currently has over 20 members--a diverse group of dedicated and talented musicians who share a love of gospel music. The singers are well known for their powerful delivery of gospel music and have performed at many local churches and other venues throughout the region, including Alamogordo, Silver City, and El Paso. Due to the spirit of collaboration with the music department, students may now receive college credit for taking part in this choir. For more information contact the faculty advisor, Dr. Bobbie Green, at 646-3025.
