The NMSU Department of Music has been an established, independent department since 1962.
The MISSION of New Mexico State University's Music Department is:
- To prepare our students for careers in music education, business, and/or performance.
- To give the student body opportunities to perform, study, and experience music.
- To enhance the cultural lives of our constituency by the performance of superior music.
- To create an artistic environment which fosters personal growth essential to the fabric of a healthy society.
The GOALS of the Music Department are to:
- Provide quality education to students.
- Prepare students for successful careers as educators, primarily in public schools or in private studios.
- Prepare students to successfully pursue graduate studies in music at recognized and established institutions and conservatories nationwide.
The Music Department OFFERS:
- Minor in music.
- Undergraduate degrees in music performance, music education, music business.
- Master of music degrees in performance, music education and conducting.
All music majors focus on at least one applied area and must audition for admission into the program. Applied areas include: voice, piano, violin, viola, cello, double bass, organ, flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, saxophone, french horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion.
The Music Department is housed in one building that consists of:
- Two rehearsal halls.
- One auditorium that seats 504.
- Two dressing rooms.
- Three classrooms that seat 30-35.
- Four area offices.
- 21 faculty offices.
Within our ranks are many outstanding performers and educators, representing a broad diversification of background range and talent. Faculty members present many solo and ensemble performances, as well as clinics and workshops during the year.
